Under the National Respite for Carers Program, the Commonwealth Carer Respite Centres provide information, referral and short term respite to people caring for a family member or friend who is frail aged, has dementia, terminal or mental illness, or a disability.
Are You A Carer? - Carers are people who provide voluntary care for a family member, friend or neighbour who may have a disability, a mental or terminal illness, dementia, or is frail aged.
What is Carer Respite? - Carer respite provides the carer with the opportunity to take a break from their caring role. This can be in the case of an emergency or crisis.
Types of Respite - In home care is when a trained carer comes to your home to assist the person you care for while you take a break. Out of home care includes day centres, residential aged and disability care homes and cottage homes.
Other Support Services for Carers - assistance with home tasks (meal preparation, cleaning, laundry), assistance towards the cost of transport and equipment, minor home or vehicle modifciations, education and training, plus remedial treatments or counselling services.
